As with many other spices on here, (and rightfully so, as we only sell the rare stuff) mace was once literally worth more than gold and only the really wealthy could have a go at it. Mace actually comes from the same fruit that nutmeg comes in, which is the nutmeg tree. Mace is the red covering around the nutmeg seed. Yet, for every 100 pounds of nutmeg, only 15 pounds of mace is produced, making it far rarer.
